THE MARTCH BROTHERS: A Legacy of Community

One of the best parts of covering the cannabis industry is meeting the people who help shape its culture. Sure, there are plenty of entrepreneurs building successful businesses, but every so often you come across someone whose impact has less to do with sales and everything to do with relationships. That’s what stood out to me about the Martch brothers.

Nathan and Ben Martch grew up in Oregon with strong family ties to Pittsburgh, and those roots helped shape the way they approached life. Family came first, loyalty mattered, and treating people with respect wasn’t something you turned on for business meetings - it was simply how you lived. Only 17 months apart, the brothers shared the kind of bond that naturally carried into adulthood, where they developed a passion for cannabis and the community that surrounded it.

Long before cannabis became widely accepted, they recognized what so many people outside the industry missed. The plant has always had a way of bringing people together. It sparks conversations, inspires creativity, and creates friendships that often last far longer than the session itself. That sense of community became something both brothers genuinely believed in, and it continues to influence the people who knew them.

Friends called Nathan “Real Deal,” a nickname that seemed to fit every story I heard. He had an easygoing personality, a quick smile, unmistakable voice, and the ability to make people feel comfortable almost immediately. Those qualities earned him lasting friendships and left an impression on nearly everyone he met.

Like many early advocates, Nathan also experienced a time when cannabis carried consequences that seem very different from today’s landscape. Public marijuana-related charges in Pennsylvania in 2014 became part of his story, but they never defined who he was. Ask the people closest to him what they remember, and they’ll talk about his generosity, his loyalty, and the way he looked out for family and friends.

When Nathan unexpectedly passed away in 2023, his loss was deeply felt by those who loved him. For Ben, however, moving forward didn’t mean leaving his brother behind. It meant carrying those same values into everything he continues to build.

Today, Ben remains active through KARMA Cannabis, bringing people together through partnerships, events, and the relationships he’s cultivated throughout Colorado and beyond. In an industry that moves incredibly fast, he’s built a reputation by doing something surprisingly simple: treating people well. It’s an approach that reflects how he was raised and one that’s becoming increasingly valuable in a world that often feels more transactional than personal.

The cannabis industry has changed dramatically over the past decade, but its strongest foundation has always been community. Businesses come and go, trends evolve, and products change, yet the people who make the biggest difference are often the ones who invest in others. That’s the impression the Martch brothers have left.

Their story isn’t just about cannabis. It’s about family, friendship, and the idea that the relationships we build along the way often become our greatest legacy. Those who knew Nathan continue to share his stories, and through Ben’s work, that spirit of bringing people together continues to grow.
